High resolution framebuffer fails on machines that are configured with 4GB memory or higher

Problem

High resolution framebuffer (1280x1024) fails on machines that are configured with 4GB memory or higher. This normally occurs during the OS installation or after the system memory has been upgraded.

The symptom occurs on models that are configured with the Nvidia graphic card. Newer version of SuSE Linux 9.X also exhibits the same problem.

Solution

During the OS installation, use the framebuffer at a lower resolution (640x480) or use the text mode.

Before upgrading the system memory, edit /etc/grub.conf and disable the framebuffer by passing the kernel parameter 'vga=normal'.
