RHEL3 does not detect the Marvell Gigabit controller on the Marquis C430

Problem

The installer fails to detect the Marvell Gigabit controller on the Marquis C430.

Detail

Under RHEL 3, the driver for Marvell gigabit controllers is stored in the kernel-unsupported package. Because of this, it is unavailable for use during installation. In addition, the version of the driver is older and does not detect the newer Marvell Gigabit controller.

Solution

ASL provides a driver disk and source rpm for an updated version (8.23) of the Marvell (sk98lin) Gigabit driver. To re-install the system, do the following:

  1. Boot the system from the RHEL installation media
  2. At the boot prompt, type "linux dd"
  3. When prompted for a driver disk, insert the CentOS 3.5 / RHEL3 Driver CD

Note: There are separate Driver CD for 32-bit and 64-bit versions. In addition, the Driver CD is only included on systems purchased with CentOS 3.5 or RHEL3. To request for the CentOS 3.5 / RHEL3 Driver CD, send an Email to techsupport@aslab.com and specify 32-bit or 64-bit version. A serial number of the system is also required.
