Loud hiss when loading sound driver for Soundblaster 16 PCI under Fedora Core 2 or 3

Problem

When loading the sound driver (es1371) for Soundblaster 16 PCI under Fedora Core 2 or 3, a loud hiss is heard through the speakers

Launch the KDE sound mixer (kmix), click on the advanced option, and turn off IEC958.
